Greater Cleveland/Akron has strong roots in manufacturing; however, our economy and key industries have diversified significantly in the last 20 years. There are 25 Fortune 500 companies based in Ohio, eight of which are headquartered in our region.

The diverse economy in Greater Cleveland/Akron is driven by Healthcare, Manufacturing, Retail, Banking and Financial Services, Education, Insurance, Sports, and Technology.

Greater Cleveland's economy employs 996k people. The largest industries are Healthcare and Social Assistance (168,957 people), Manufacturing (139,455 people), and Retail Trade (105,575 people). The highest paying industries are Management of Companies and Enterprises, Utilities, and Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services.

Greater Akron's economy employs 352k people. The largest industries are Healthcare and Social Assistance (52,857 people), Manufacturing (52,804 people), and Retail Trade (42,696 people). The highest paying industries are Management of Companies and Enterprises, Utilities, and Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction.

The region's economic landscape also includes entrepreneurial talent in every sector from retail to aerospace.

Major Employers

Cuyahoga County is unique as it has the most businesses in the state employing residents, topping out at 31,780 employers.

The healthcare sector is the largest source of employment in both Greater Cleveland/Akron and Ohio. Cleveland Clinic has the largest employment headcount in the state at 56,986.

Even though the manufacturing landscape has changed over the years, many leading manufacturers call our region home and specialize in advanced manufacturing, aerospace and aviation, automotive, energy and chemicals, and technology.

Ohio is also a major financial center with both state and national employers. Two of the state's top financial employers, Progressive and KeyCorp, are headquartered in Greater Cleveland/Akron.

Greater Cleveland/Akron's growing startup atmosphere is ruled primarily by healthcare, biotech, and finance.

There are also several large companies headquartered in Cleveland with national and international reaches that are not listed below, such as Weston, Eaton, and American Greetings.

Key Industries

Chambers of Commerce

Greater Cleveland is served by the highly respected Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) is the country's largest metropolitan chamber of commerce with more than 12,000 members. It is guided by a board of directors that represents the corporate and entrepreneurial leadership of companies in the region ranging from Fortune 500s to 3rd generation family-run manufacturing shops. GCP includes the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE) and Cleveland Development Advisors, a real estate firm affiliate.
