Location

Many candidates and new hires have never visited Cleveland or Akron before considering the job opportunity at hand. If you had to pull up a map to see these locations, you will find this information helpful.

What does "Cleveland" include?

Cleveland is the primary city in the region. Typically, the name is used when referencing the entire area around it including the city of Akron and the suburbs surrounding both of these cities. You will also hear the area referred to as: Northeast Ohio, NE Ohio, NEO, Greater Cleveland, Greater Akron, or "Cleveland, Akron, and Canton."

Geography

  1. Ohio is in the midwestern region of the United States. It is the 34th largest state by area. With a population of nearly 11.8 million, it is the 7th most populous and 10th most densely populated.

  2. Ohio shares a border with five states: Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

  3. The region sits on the south side of Lake Erie (which it shares with Canada, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania), the western edge of the foothills of the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains, and just east of the beginning of the Great Plains.

  4. Located about halfway between New York City and Chicago, it is within 500 miles of nearly one half of the country's population.

  5. The region is often described as "where the East Coast meets the Midwest."

  6. The location on Lake Erie is described as the North Coast.

  7. Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes, the country's largest fresh water source. Combined with their connecting channels the Great Lakes form the largest fresh surface water system on earth.

  8. Cleveland is bisected by the beautiful Cuyahoga River, which was recently name "River of the Year" by the American Rivers Conservation Association.

Time Zone

One advantage to living in Cleveland/Akron is that it is on the west side of the Eastern Time Zone. This  is useful in the summer as daylight lasts until well after 9:00 pm. When most of the East Coast is bathed in darkness, residents of Cleveland/Akron are enjoying long, warm summer nights. This extra daylight makes it easy to go out after work and play 18 holes of golf, hike in the park, take a ride on your boat, or just sit on the back deck and watch your kids play in the backyard. The extra daylight is priceless!
