Bookstores - Independent

We all love libraries but sometimes we have the urge to own a book. Maybe because we're tired of books on hold or it's a favorite to go back to over and over again or maybe to jot notes in the margins for the next bookclub meeting. Whatever the reason, here are some fabulous independent bookstores with perfect ambiance and collections for book lovers.

East Side

In Coventry Village, Cleveland Heights' answer to Haight Ashbury, it has three floors of books, monthly poetry readings and bookclubs. It's a funky, spirited place that has been there since the 1980's.

An anchor in the Cedar/Fairmount neighborhood of Cleveland Heights since the 1970's. There's a "book guru" who can point you in the right direction for anything. It hosts readings and book clubs.  Part gift shop,  part gathering place and part bookstore, with a huge children's section that includes readings.

On Larchmere Blvd. in the Shaker Square neighborhood, you'll see tall windows, wooden bookshelves to the ceiling, and large overstuffed chairs and ottomans that encourage reading. It feels like the place where Harry Potter would hang out if he came to Cleveland. If you can describe a book you remember from childhood with characters or storyline, chances are they know it and can find you a copy.

In downtown Chagrin Falls with three levels, the top floor being the children's section.

On the main street of downtown Hudson in an historic building which adds lots of charm. Authors routinely stop by for signings.

West Side

Just steps from the West Side Market on W. 25th Street. It's great for a scavenger hunt, used books and for those on a budget who can't resist adding just one more book to their collection.

Tremont's small but highly curated bookshop that regularly features live music, wine tastings and book club gatherings.

John, the Owner, has been collecting books since the 1960's.  He has 2500 books to browse, all at $5. They also carry rare and early editions. Must call for an appointment even before Covid-19.

On Madison Avenue in Lakewood, this small community bookstore offers new and used books.
